Ifeach,Itoldmyself,couldbutbehousedinseparateidentities,lifewouldberelievedofallthatwasunbearable;theunjustdeliveredfromtheaspirationsmightgohisway,andremorseofhismoreuprighttwin; andthejustcouldwalksteadfastlyandsecurelyonhisupwardpath,doingthegoodthingsinwhichhefoundhispleasure,andnolongerexposedtodisgraceandpenitencebythehandsofthisextraneousevil. Itwasthecurseofmankindthattheseincongruousfagotswerethusboundtogetherthatintheagonisedwombofconsciousness,thesepolartwinsshouldbecontinuouslystruggling. How,then,weretheydissociated?
Iwassofarinmyreflectionswhen,asIhavesaid,aside-lightbegantoshineuponthesubjectfromthelaboratorytable. Ibegantoperceivemoredeeplythanithaseveryetbeenstated,thetremblingimmateriality,themist-liketransienceofthisseeminglysosolidbodyinwhichwewalkattired.
