OnthevaststonebreastwefaintlydiscernedtheemblemofRe–Harakhte, forwhoseimagetheSphinxwasmistakeninalatedynasty; andthoughsandcoveredthetabletbetweenthegreatpaws,werecalledwhatThutmosisIVinscribedthereon,andthedreamhehadwhenaprince. ItwasthenthatthesmileoftheSphinxvaguelydispleasedus,andmadeuswonderaboutthelegendsofsubterraneanpassagesbeneaththemonstrouscreature,leadingdown,down, todepthsnonemightdarehintat—depthsconnectedwithmysteriesolderthanthedynasticEgyptweexcavate, andhavingasinisterrelationtothepersistenceofabnormal,animal-headedgodsintheancientNiloticpantheon.
