"LittleRaphael,"ashersisterscalledher,hadadecidedtalentfordrawing,andwasneversohappyaswhencopyingflowers,designingfairies,orillustratingstorieswithqueerspecimensofart.Herteacherscomplainedthatinsteadofdoinghersumsshecoveredherslatewithanimals,theblankpagesofheratlaswereusedtocopymapson,andcaricaturesofthemostludicrousdescriptioncameflutteringoutofallherbooksatunluckymoments.Shegotthroughherlessonsaswellasshecould,andmanagedtoescapereprimandsbybeingamodelofdeportment.Shewasagreatfavoritewithhermates,beinggood-temperedandpossessingthehappyartofpleasingwithouteffort.Herlittleairsandgracesweremuchadmired,sowereheraccomplishments,forbesidesherdrawing,shecouldplaytwelvetunes,crochet,andreadFrenchwithoutmispronouncingmorethantwo-thirdsofthewords.Shehadaplaintivewayofsaying,"WhenPapawasrichwedidso-and-so,"whichwasverytouching,andherlongwordswereconsidered‘perfectlyelegant’bythegirls.
Amywasinafairwaytobespoiled,foreveryonepettedher,andhersmallvanitiesandselfishnessesweregrowingnicely.Onething,however,ratherquenchedthevanities.Shehadtowearhercousin’sclothes.NowFlorence’smamahadn’taparticleoftaste,andAmysuffereddeeplyathavingtoweararedinsteadofabluebonnet,unbecominggowns,andfussyapronsthatdidnotfit.
