WhenherheartgotheavywithlongingsforMotherorfearsforFather,shewentawayintoacertaincloset,hidherfaceinthefoldsofadearoldgown,andmadeherlittlemoanandprayedherlittleprayerquietlybyherself.Nobodyknewwhatcheeredherupafterasoberfit,buteveryonefelthowsweetandhelpfulBethwas,andfellintoawayofgoingtoherforcomfortoradviceintheirsmallaffairs.
Allwereunconsciousthatthisexperiencewasatestofcharacter,andwhenthefirstexcitementwasover,feltthattheyhaddonewellanddeservedpraise.Sotheydid,buttheirmistakewasinceasingtodowell,andtheylearnedthislessonthroughmuchanxietyandregret.

"I’mtootiredtogothisafternoon,"repliedMeg,rockingcomfortablyasshesewed.
