Themorningcharitiesandceremoniestooksomuchtimethattherestofthedaywasdevotedtopreparationsfortheeveningfestivities.Beingstilltooyoungtogooftentothetheater,andnotrichenoughtoaffordanygreatoutlayforprivateperformances,thegirlsputtheirwitstowork,andnecessitybeingthemotherofinvention,madewhatevertheyneeded.Verycleverweresomeoftheirproductions,pasteboardguitars,antiquelampsmadeofold-fashionedbutterboatscoveredwithsilverpaper,gorgeousrobesofoldcotton,glitteringwithtinspanglesfromapicklefactory,andarmorcoveredwiththesameusefuldiamondshapedbitsleftinsheetswhenthelidsofpreservepotswerecutout.Thebigchamberwasthesceneofmanyinnocentrevels.
Nogentlemanwereadmitted,soJoplayedmalepartstoherheart’scontentandtookimmensesatisfactioninapairofrussetleatherbootsgivenherbyafriend,whoknewaladywhoknewanactor.Theseboots,anoldfoil,andaslasheddoubletonceusedbyanartistforsomepicture,wereJo’schieftreasuresandappearedonalloccasions.
