           Tents,lunch,andcroquetutensilshavingbeensentonbeforehand,thepartywassoonembarked,andthetwoboatspushedofftogether,leavingMr.Laurencewavinghishatontheshore.LaurieandJorowedoneboat,Mr.BrookeandNedtheother,whileFredVaughn,theriotoustwin,didhisbesttoupsetbothbypaddlingaboutinawherrylikeadisturbedwaterbug.Jo’sfunnyhatdeservedavoteofthanks,foritwasofgeneralutility.Itbroketheiceinthebeginningbyproducingalaugh,itcreatedquitearefreshingbreeze,flappingtoandfroassherowed,andwouldmakeanexcellentumbrellaforthewholeparty,ifashowercameup,shesaid.MissKatedecidedthatshewas‘odd’,butratherclever,andsmileduponherfromafar.

           Meg,intheotherboat,wasdelightfullysituated,facetofacewiththerowers,whobothadmiredtheprospectandfeatheredtheiroarswithuncommon‘skillanddexterity’.Mr.Brookewasagrave,silentyoungman,withhandsomebrowneyesandapleasantvoice.
