           Whentheeveningforthesmallpartycame,shefoundthatthepoplinwouldn’tdoatall,fortheothergirlswereputtingonthindressesandmakingthemselvesveryfineindeed.Sooutcamethetarlatan,lookingolder,limper,andshabbierthaneverbesideSallie’scrispnewone.Megsawthegirlsglanceatitandthenatoneanother,andhercheeksbegantoburn,forwithallhergentlenessshewasveryproud.Noonesaidawordaboutit,butSallieofferedtodressherhair,andAnnietotiehersash,andBelle,theengagedsister,praisedherwhitearms.ButintheirkindnessMegsawonlypityforherpoverty,andherheartfeltveryheavyasshestoodbyherself,whiletheotherslaughed,chattered,andflewaboutlikegauzybutterflies.Thehard,bitterfeelingwasgettingprettybad,whenthemaidbroughtinaboxofflowers.Beforeshecouldspeak,Anniehadthecoveroff,andallwereexclaimingatthelovelyroses,heath,andfernwithin.
