Huntersforgoldorpursuersoffame,theyallhadgoneoutonthatstream,bearingthesword,andoftenthetorch,messengersofthemightwithintheland,bearersofasparkfromthesacredfire.Whatgreatnesshadnotfloatedontheebbofthatriverintothemysteryofanunknownearth!...Thedreamsofmen,theseedofcommonwealths,thegermsofempires.
Thesunset;theduskfellonthestream,andlightsbegantoappearalongtheshore.TheChapmanlight-house,athree-leggedthingerectonamud-flat,shonestrongly.Lightsofshipsmovedinthefairway—agreatstiroflightsgoingupandgoingdown.Andfartherwestontheupperreachestheplaceofthemonstroustownwasstillmarkedominouslyonthesky,abroodinggloominsunshine,aluridglareunderthestars.
