‘WhatamItodo?’exclaimedAlice,lookingaboutingreatperplexity,asfirstoneroundhead,andthentheother,rolleddownfromhershoulder,andlaylikeaheavylumpinherlap.‘Idon’tthinkiteverhappenedbefore,thatanyonehadtotakecareoftwoQueensasleepatonce!No,notinalltheHistoryofEngland—itcouldn’t,youknow,becausethereneverwasmorethanoneQueenatatime.‘Dowakeup,youheavythings!’shewentoninanimpatienttone;buttherewasnoanswerbutagentlesnoring.
Thesnoringgotmoredistincteveryminute,andsoundedmorelikeatune:atlastshecouldevenmakeoutthewords,andshelistenedsoeagerlythat,whenthetwogreatheadsvanishedfromherlap,shehardlymissedthem.
ShewasstandingbeforeanarcheddoorwayoverwhichwerethewordsQueenAliceinlargeletters,andoneachsideofthearchtherewasabell-handle;onewasmarked‘Visitors’Bell,’andtheother‘Servants’Bell.’
