Irememberedsowellthethoughtfulsweetfaceofthatwhite-hairedoldman,inhisblackcassock,ashestoodinthatrude,lofty,brownroom,withtheclumsyfurnitureofafashionthreehundredyearsoldabouthim,andthescantylightenteringitsshadowyatmospherethroughthesmalllattice.Hekneeled,andthethreewomenwithhim,andheprayedaloudwithanearnestquaveringvoicefor,whatappearedtome,alongtime.Iforgetallmylifeprecedingthatevent,andforsometimeafteritisallobscurealso,butthescenesIhavejustdescribedstandoutvividastheisolatedpicturesofthephantasmagoriasurroundedbydarkness.
