Othersagain,belongingtothedoubtingclass,expressedcertainfearsastothepositionofthemoon.Theyhadhearditsaidthat,accordingtoobservationsmadeinthetimeoftheCaliphs,herrevolutionhadbecomeacceleratedinacertaindegree.Hencetheyconcluded,logicallyenough,thatanaccelerationofmotionoughttobeaccompaniedbyacorrespondingdiminutioninthedistanceseparatingthetwobodies;andthat,supposingthedoubleeffecttobecontinuedtoinfinity,themoonwouldendbyonedayfallingintotheearth.However,theybecamereassuredastothefateoffuturegenerationsonbeingapprisedthat,accordingtothecalculationsofLaplace,thisaccelerationofmotionisconfinedwithinveryrestrictedlimits,andthataproportionaldiminutionofspeedwillbecertaintosucceedit.So,then,thestabilityofthesolarsystemwouldnotbederangedinagestocome.
Thereremainsbutthethirdclass,thesuperstitious.Theseworthieswerenotcontentmerelytorestinignorance;theymustknowallaboutthingswhichhadnoexistencewhatever,andastothemoon,theyhadlongknownallabouther.Onesetregardedherdiscasapolishedmirror,bymeansofwhichpeoplecouldseeeachotherfromdifferentpointsoftheearthandinterchangetheirthoughts
