           Thescientificjournals,fortheirpart,dealtmoreespeciallywiththequestionswhichtouchedupontheenterpriseoftheGunClub.TheletteroftheObservatoryofCambridgewaspublishedbythem,andcommenteduponwithunreservedapproval.

           Untilthattimemostpeoplehadbeenignorantofthemodeinwhichthedistancewhichseparatesthemoonfromtheearthiscalculated.Theytookadvantageofthisfacttoexplaintothemthatthisdistancewasobtainedbymeasuringtheparallaxofthemoon.Thetermparallaxproving"caviaretothegeneral,"theyfurtherexplainedthatitmeanttheangleformedbytheinclinationoftwostraightlinesdrawnfromeitherextremityoftheearth’sradiustothemoon.Ondoubtsbeingexpressedastothecorrectnessofthismethod,theyimmediatelyprovedthatnotonlywasthemeandistance234,347miles,butthatastronomerscouldnotpossiblybeinerrorintheirestimatebymorethanseventymileseitherway.
