Withoutamoment’slossoftimeasmallboatputoffinthedirectionofitsfall;somediversplungedintothewaterandattachedropestothehandlesoftheshell,whichwasquicklydraggedonboard.Fiveminutesdidnotelapsebetweenthemomentofenclosingtheanimalsandthatofunscrewingthecoverlidoftheirprison.
Ardan,Barbicane,Maston,andNichollwerepresentonboardtheboat,andassistedattheoperationwithaninterestwhichmayreadilybecomprehended.Hardlyhadtheshellbeenopenedwhenthecatleapedout,slightlybruised,butfulloflife,andexhibitingnosignswhateverofhavingmadeanaerialexpedition.Notrace,however,ofthesquirrelcouldbediscovered.Thetruthatlastbecameapparent—thecathadeatenitsfellow-traveler!
