Yes,thiswasanotherworld.Theroomhadaslantingroofandwaswhitewashed.Thewhitewashwasdingyandhadfallenoffinplaces.Therewasarustygrate,anoldironbedstead,andahardbedcoveredwithafadedcoverlet.Somepiecesoffurnituretoomuchworntobeuseddownstairshadbeensentup.Undertheskylightintheroof,whichshowednothingbutanoblongpieceofdullgraysky,therestoodanoldbatteredredfootstool.Sarawenttoitandsatdown.Sheseldomcried.Shedidnotcrynow.ShelaidEmilyacrossherkneesandputherfacedownuponherandherarmsaroundher,andsatthere,herlittleblackheadrestingontheblackdraperies,notsayingoneword,notmakingonesound.
Andasshesatinthissilencetherecamealowtapatthedoor—suchalow,humbleonethatshedidnotatfirsthearit,and,indeed,wasnotrouseduntilthedoorwastimidlypushedopenandapoortear-smearedfaceappearedpeepingroundit.ItwasBecky’sface,andBeckyhadbeencryingfurtivelyforhoursandrubbinghereyeswithherkitchenapronuntilshelookedstrangeindeed.
