           IfSarahadbeenolderorlesspunctiliousaboutbeingquitepolitetopeople,shecouldhaveexplainedherselfinaveryfewwords.But,asitwas,shefeltaflushrisingonhercheeks.MissMinchinwasaverysevereandimposingperson,andsheseemedsoabsolutelysurethatSaraknewnothingwhateverofFrenchthatshefeltasifitwouldbealmostrudetocorrecther.ThetruthwasthatSaracouldnotrememberthetimewhenshehadnotseemedtoknowFrench.Herfatherhadoftenspokenittoherwhenshehadbeenababy.HermotherhadbeenaFrenchwoman,andCaptainCrewehadlovedherlanguage,soithappenedthatSarahadalwaysheardandbeenfamiliarwithit.

           "IIhaveneverreallylearnedFrench,butbut"shebegan,tryingshylytomakeherselfclear.

           OneofMissMinchin’schiefsecretannoyanceswasthatshedidnotspeakFrenchherself,andwasdesirousofconcealingtheirritatingfact.She,therefore,hadnointentionofdiscussingthematterandlayingherselfopentoinnocentquestioningbyanewlittlepupil.

           "Thatisenough,"shesaidwithpolitetartness."Ifyouhavenotlearned,youmustbeginatonce.TheFrenchmaster,MonsieurDufarge,willbehereinafewminutes.Takethisbookandlookatituntilhearrives."
