Hereinweseeaphenomenonnotinfrequentlyobserved—thephenomenonoftheChichikovsofthisworldbecomingtemporarilypoets.Atallevents,foramomentortwoourChichikovfeltthathewasayoungmanagain,ifnotexactlyamilitaryofficer.Onperceivinganemptychairbesidethemotheranddaughter,hehastenedtooccupyit,andthoughconversationatfirsthungfire,thingsgraduallyimproved,andheacquiredmoreconfidence.
