           TothisChichikovassentedreadilyenoughmerelyaddingthatheshouldlikefirstofalltobefurnishedwithalistofthedeadsouls.ThisreassuredPlushkinastohisguest’sintentionofdoingbusiness,sohegotouthiskeys,approachedacupboard,and,havingpulledbackthedoor,rummagedamongthecupsandglasseswithwhichitwasfilled.Atlengthhesaid:

           “Icannotfinditnow,butIusedtopossessasplendidbottleofliquor.Probablytheservantshavedrunkitall,fortheyaresuchthieves.Ohno:perhapsthisisit!”

           Lookingup,ChichikovsawthatPlushkinhadextractedadecantercoatedwithdust.

           “Mylatewifemadethestuff,”wentontheoldman,“butthatrascalofahousekeeperwentandthrewawayalotofit,andneverevenreplacedthestopper.Consequentlybugsandothernastycreaturesgotintothedecanter,butIcleaneditout,andnowbegtoofferyouaglassful.”

           TheideaofadrinkfromsuchareceptaclewastoomuchforChichikov,soheexcusedhimselfonthegroundthathehadjusthadluncheon.

           “Youhavejusthadluncheon?”re-echoedPlushkin.“Now,THATshowshowinvariablyonecantellamanofgoodsociety,wheresoeveronemaybe.Amanofthatkindnevereatsanythinghealwayssaysthathehashadenough.Verydifferentthatfromthewaysofarogue,whomonecanneversatisfy,howevermuchonemaygivehim.Forinstance,thatcaptainofmineisconstantlybeggingmetolethimhaveamealthoughheisaboutasmuchmynephewasIamhisgrandfather.Asithappens,thereisneverabiteofanythinginthehouse,sohehastogoawayempty.
