WhenIshallhavereadallthebooksandlearnedmynewway,whenmyhomewillbereadyandmyearthtilled,Ishallstealoneday,forthelasttime,intothecursedCityofmybirth.IshallcalltomemyfriendwhohasnonamesaveInternational4-8818,andallthoselikehim,Fraternity2-5503,whocrieswithoutreason,andSolidarity9-6347whocallsforhelpinthenight,andafewothers.Ishallcalltomeallthemenandthewomenwhosespirithasnotbeenkilledwithinthemandwhosufferundertheyokeoftheirbrothers.TheywillfollowmeandIshallleadthemtomyfortress.Andhere,inthisunchartedwilderness,Iandthey,mychosenfriends,myfellow-builders,shallwritethefirstchapterinthenewhistoryofman.
Thesearethethingsbeforeme.AndasIstandhereatthedoorofglory,Ilookbehindmeforthelasttime.Ilookuponthehistoryofmen,whichIhavelearnedfromthebooks,andIwonder.Itwasalongstory,andthespiritwhichmoveditwasthespiritofman’sfreedom.Butwhatisfreedom?Freedomfromwhat?Thereisnothingtotakeaman’sfreedomawayfromhim,saveothermen.Tobefree,amanmustbefreeofhisbrothers.Thatisfreedom.Thatandnothingelse.
