WelovedtheScienceofThings.Andinthedarkness,inthesecrethour,whenweawokeinthenightandtherewerenobrothersaroundus,butonlytheirshapesinthebedsandtheirsnores,weclosedoureyes,andweheldourlipsshut,andwestoppedourbreath,thatnoshuddermightletourbrothersseeorhearorguess,andwethoughtthatwewishedtobesenttotheHomeoftheScholarswhenourtimewouldcome.
AllthegreatmoderninventionscomefromtheHomeoftheScholars,suchasthenewestone,whichwasfoundonlyahundredyearsago,ofhowtomakecandlesfromwaxandstring;also,howtomakeglass,whichisputinourwindowstoprotectusfromtherain.Tofindthesethings,theScholarsmuststudytheearthandlearnfromtherivers,fromthesands,fromthewindsandtherocks.AndifwewenttotheHomeoftheScholars,wecouldlearnfromthesealso.Wecouldaskquestionsofthese,fortheydonotforbidquestions.
