Theyapproachus,andtheystop,laughing,knowingwhatwethink,andtheywaitobediently,withoutquestions,tillitpleasesustoturnandgoon.
Wegoonandweblesstheearthunderourfeet.Butquestionscometousagain,aswewalkinsilence.Ifthatwhichwehavefoundisthecorruptionofsolitude,thenwhatcanmenwishforsavecorruption?Ifthisisthegreatevilofbeingalone,thenwhatisgoodandwhatisevil?
Everythingwhichcomesfromthemanyisgood.Everythingwhichcomesfromoneisevil.Thishavewebeentaughtwithourfirstbreath.Wehavebrokenthelaw,butwehaveneverdoubtedit.Yetnow,aswewalkthroughtheforest,wearelearningtodoubt.
Thereisnolifeformen,saveinusefultoilforthegoodofalltheirbrothers.Butwelivednot,whenwetoiledforourbrothers,wewereonlyweary.Thereisnojoyformen,savethejoysharedwithalltheirbrothers.Buttheonlythingswhichtaughtusjoywerethepowerwecreatedinourwires,andtheGoldenOne.Andboththesejoysbelongtousalone,theycomefromusalone,theybearnorelationtoallourbrothers,andtheydonotconcernourbrothersinanyway.Thusdowewonder.
Thereissomeerror,onefrightfulerror,inthethinkingofmen.Whatisthaterror?Wedonotknow,buttheknowledgestruggleswithinus,strugglestobeborn.Today,theGoldenOnestoppedsuddenlyandsaid:
