TheheadoftheGoldenOnebowedslowly,andtheystoodstillbeforeus,theirarmsattheirsides,thepalmsoftheirhandsturnedtous,asiftheirbodyweredeliveredinsubmissiontooureyes.Andwecouldnotspeak.
Thentheyraisedtheirhead,andtheyspokesimplyandgently,asiftheywishedustoforgetsomeanxietyoftheirown.
“Thedayishot,”theysaid,“andyouhaveworkedformanyhoursandyoumustbeweary.”
“No,”weanswered.
“Itiscoolerinthefields,”theysaid,“andthereiswatertodrink.Areyouthirsty?”
“Yes,”weanswered,“butwecannotcrossthehedge.”
“Weshallbringthewatertoyou,”theysaid.
Thentheykneltbythemoat,theygatheredwaterintheirtwohands,theyroseandtheyheldthewaterouttoourlips.
Wedonotknowifwedrankthatwater.Weonlyknewsuddenlythattheirhandswereempty,butwewerestillholdingourlipstotheirhands,andthattheyknewit,butdidnotmove.
Weraisedourheadandsteppedback.Forwedidnotunderstandwhathadmadeusdothis,andwewereafraidtounderstandit.
AndtheGoldenOnesteppedback,andstoodlookingupontheirhandsinwonder.ThentheGoldenOnemovedaway,eventhoughnootherswerecoming,andtheymoved,steppingback,asiftheycouldnotturnfromus,theirarmsbentbeforethem,asiftheycouldnotlowertheirhands.
