           Indefinitelyfromsomewhereabellboomedthequarter-hour,andAmory,pausingbythesun-dial,stretchedhimselfoutfulllengthonthedampgrass.ThecoolbathedhiseyesandslowedtheflightoftimetimethathadcreptsoinsidiouslythroughthelazyAprilafternoons,seemedsointangibleinthelongspringtwilights.Eveningaftereveningtheseniorsinginghaddriftedoverthecampusinmelancholybeauty,andthroughtheshellofhisundergraduateconsciousnesshadbrokenadeepandreverentdevotiontothegraywallsandGothicpeaksandalltheysymbolizedaswarehousesofdeadages.

           Thetowerthatinviewofhiswindowsprangupward,grewintoaspire,yearninghigheruntilitsuppermosttipwashalfinvisibleagainstthemorningskies,gavehimthefirstsenseofthetransiencyandunimportanceofthecampusfiguresexceptasholdersoftheapostolicsuccession.HelikedknowingthatGothicarchitecture,withitsupwardtrend,waspeculiarlyappropriatetouniversities,andtheideabecamepersonaltohim.Thesilentstretchesofgreen,thequiethallswithanoccasionallate-burningscholasticlightheldhisimaginationinastronggrasp,andthechastityofthespirebecameasymbolofthisperception.
