           ForyearsafterwardwhenAmorythoughtofEleanorheseemedstilltohearthewindsobbingaroundhimandsendinglittlechillsintotheplacesbesidehisheart.Thenightwhentheyrodeuptheslopeandwatchedthecoldmoonfloatthroughtheclouds,helostafurtherpartofhimthatnothingcouldrestore;andwhenhelostithelostalsothepowerofregrettingit.Eleanorwas,say,thelasttimethatevilcreptclosetoAmoryunderthemaskofbeauty,thelastweirdmysterythatheldhimwithwildfascinationandpoundedhissoultoflakes.

           Withherhisimaginationranriotandthatiswhytheyrodetothehighesthillandwatchedanevilmoonridehigh,fortheyknewthenthattheycouldseethedevilineachother.ButEleanordidAmorydreamher?Afterwardtheirghostsplayed,yetbothofthemhopedfromtheirsoulsnevertomeet.Wasittheinfinitesadnessofhereyesthatdrewhimorthemirrorofhimselfthathefoundinthegorgeousclarityofhermind?ShewillhavenootheradventurelikeAmory,andifshereadsthisshewillsay:
