TheHolidayswererumoredtwins,butreallythedark-hairedone,Kerry,wasayearolderthanhisblondbrother,Burne.Kerrywastall,withhumorousgrayeyes,andasudden,attractivesmile;hebecameatoncethementorofthehouse,reaperofearsthatgrewtoohigh,censorofconceit,vendorofrare,satiricalhumor.Amoryspreadthetableoftheirfuturefriendshipwithallhisideasofwhatcollegeshouldanddidmean.Kerry,notinclinedasyettotakethingsseriously,chidedhimgentlyforbeingcuriousatthisinopportunetimeabouttheintricaciesofthesocialsystem,butlikedhimandwasbothinterestedandamused.
Burne,fair-haired,silent,andintent,appearedinthehouseonlyasabusyapparition,glidinginquietlyatnightandoffagainintheearlymorningtogetuphisworkinthelibrary—hewasoutforthePrincetonian,competingfuriouslyagainstfortyothersforthecovetedfirstplace.InDecemberhecamedownwithdiphtheria,andsomeoneelsewonthecompetition,but,returningtocollegeinFebruary,hedauntlesslywentaftertheprizeagain.
