ThedayhadputAmoryinsuchacontemplativemoodthathecausedmuchannoyancetoseveralmotoristswhowereforcedtoslowupconsiderablyorelserunhimdown.Soengrossedinhisthoughtswashethathewasscarcelysurprisedatthatstrangephenomenon—cordialitymanifestedwithinfiftymilesofManhattan—whenapassingcarsloweddownbesidehimandavoicehailedhim.HelookedupandsawamagnificentLocomobileinwhichsattwomiddle-agedmen,oneofthemsmallandanxiouslooking,apparentlyanartificialgrowthontheotherwhowaslargeandbegoggledandimposing.
"Doyouwantalift?"askedtheapparentlyartificialgrowth,glancingfromthecornerofhiseyeattheimposingmanasifforsomehabitual,silentcorroboration.
