           "Whatdoyoumean?"

           "Thisstreet,it’sghastly!Comeon!let’sgetbacktotheAvenue!"

           "Doyoumeantosay,"saidSloanestolidly,"that’causeyouhadsomesortofindigestionthatmadeyouactlikeamaniaclastnight,you’renevercomingonBroadwayagain?"

           SimultaneouslyAmoryclassedhimwiththecrowd,andheseemednolongerSloaneofthedebonairhumorandthehappypersonality,butonlyoneoftheevilfacesthatwhirledalongtheturbidstream.

           "Man!"heshoutedsoloudthatthepeopleonthecornerturnedandfollowedthemwiththeireyes,"it’sfilthy,andifyoucan’tseeit,you’refilthy,too!"

           "Ican’thelpit,"saidSloanedoggedly."What’sthematterwithyou?Oldremorsegettingyou?You’dbeinafinestateifyou’dgonethroughwithourlittleparty."

           "I’mgoing,Fred,"saidAmoryslowly.Hiskneeswereshakingunderhim,andheknewthatifhestayedanotherminuteonthisstreethewouldkeeloverwherehestood."I’llbeattheVanderbiltforlunch."AndhestroderapidlyoffandturnedovertoFifthAvenue.
