Sosheswallowedoneofthecakes,andwasdelightedtofindthatshebeganshrinkingdirectly. Assoonasshewassmallenoughtogetthroughthedoor,sheranoutofthehouse, andfoundquiteacrowdoflittleanimalsandbirdswaitingoutside. ThepoorlittleLizard,Bill,wasinthemiddle,beingheldupbytwoguinea-pigs,whoweregivingitsomethingoutofabottle. TheyallmadearushatAlicethemomentsheappeared; butsheranoffashardasshecould,andsoonfoundherselfsafeinathickwood.
"ThefirstthingI’vegottodo,"saidAlicetoherself,asshewanderedaboutinthewood,"istogrowtomyrightsizeagain; andthesecondthingistofindmywayintothatlovelygarden. Ithinkthatwillbethebestplan."
Itsoundedanexcellentplan,nodoubt,andveryneatlyandsimplyarranged: theonlydifficultywas,thatshehadnotthesmallestideahowtosetaboutit; and,whileshewaspeeringaboutanxiouslyamongthetrees,alittlesharpbarkjustoverherheadmadeherlookupinagreathurry.
Anenormouspuppywaslookingdownatherwithlargeroundeyes,andfeeblystretchingoutonepaw,tryingtotouchher. "Poorlittlething! "saidAlice,inacoaxingtone,andshetriedhardtowhistletoit; butshewasterriblyfrightenedallthetimeatthethought thatitmightbehungry,inwhichcaseitwouldbeverylikelytoeatherupinspiteofallhercoaxing.
