Hesaysitkillsalltheratsand —ohdear!’criedAliceinasorrowfultone, ‘I’mafraidI’veoffendeditagain!’ FortheMousewasswimmingawayfromherashardasitcouldgo,andmakingquiteacommotioninthepoolasitwent.
Soshecalledsoftlyafterit,‘Mousedear!Docomebackagain,andwewon’ttalkaboutcatsordogseither,ifyoudon’tlikethem!’ WhentheMouseheardthis,itturnedroundandswamslowlybacktoher:itsfacewasquitepale(withpassion,Alicethought), anditsaidinalowtremblingvoice,‘Letusgettotheshore,andthenI’lltellyoumyhistory,andyou’llunderstandwhyitisIhatecatsanddogs.’
Itwashightimetogo,forthepoolwasgettingquitecrowdedwiththebirdsandanimalsthathadfallenintoit: therewereaDuckandaDodo,aLoryandanEaglet,andseveralothercuriouscreatures. Aliceledtheway,andthewholepartyswamtotheshore.
