           Mrs.BatesandMrs.Eltonweretogether.MissBateswasout,whichaccountedfortheprevioustranquillity.EmmacouldhavewishedMrs.Eltonelsewhere;butshewasinahumourtohavepatiencewitheverybody;andasMrs.Eltonmetherwithunusualgraciousness,shehopedtherencontrewoulddothemnoharm.

           ShesoonbelievedherselftopenetrateMrs.Elton’sthoughts,andunderstandwhyshewas,likeherself,inhappyspirits;itwasbeinginMissFairfax’sconfidence,andfancyingherselfacquaintedwithwhatwasstillasecrettootherpeople.Emmasawsymptomsofitimmediatelyintheexpressionofherface;andwhilepayingherowncomplimentstoMrs.Bates,andappearingtoattendtothegoodoldlady’sreplies,shesawherwithasortofanxiousparadeofmysteryfoldupaletterwhichshehadapparentlybeenreadingaloudtoMissFairfax,andreturnitintothepurpleandgoldreticulebyherside,saying,withsignificantnods,

           "Wecanfinishthissomeothertime,youknow.YouandIshallnotwantopportunities.And,infact,youhaveheardalltheessentialalready.IonlywantedtoprovetoyouthatMrs.S.admitsourapology,andisnotoffended.Youseehowdelightfullyshewrites.
