Therewasamoon,andtheseawasglorious.Thebreezehadshifted,asitdideachevening,andwasnowrushingsteadilyseaward.
Steppingtothewater’sedge,Geddiehurledtheunopenedbottlefaroutintothesea.Itdisappearedforamoment,andthenshotupwardtwiceitslength.Geddiestoodstill,watchingit.Themoonlightwassobrightthathecouldseeitbobbingupanddownwiththelittlewaves.Slowlyitrecededfromtheshore,flashingandturningasitwent.Thewindwascarryingitouttosea.Soonitbecameamerespeck,doubtfullydiscernedatirregularintervals;andthenthemysteryofitwasswallowedupbythegreatermysteryoftheocean.Geddiestoodstilluponthebeach,smokingandlookingoutuponthewater.
"Simon!—Oh,Simon!—wakeupthere,Simon!"bawledasonorousvoiceattheedgeofthewater.
OldSimonCruzwasahalf-breedfishermanandsmugglerwholivedinahutonthebeach.OutofhisearliestnapSimonwasthusawakened.
