Thenextmorning,whentheOtisfamilymetatbreakfast, theydiscussedtheghostatsomelength. TheUnitedStatesMinisterwasnaturallyalittleannoyed tofindthathispresenthadnotbeenaccepted. Thesekaleidoscopicchangesnaturallyamusedthepartyverymuch, andbetsonthesubjectwerefreelymadeeveryevening. TheonlypersonwhodidnotenterintothejokewaslittleVirginia, who,forsomeunexplainedreason,wasalwaysagooddealdistressedatthesightoftheblood-stain, andverynearlycriedthemorningitwasemerald-green.
