           ThecurtainfellalmostimmediatelyaftertheentranceofMadameDanglarsintoherbox,thebandquittedtheorchestrafortheaccustomedhalf-hour’sintervalallowedbetweentheacts,andtheaudiencewereleftatlibertytopromenadethesalonorlobbies,ortopayandreceivevisitsintheirrespectiveboxes.MorcerfandChateau–Renaudwereamongstthefirsttoavailthemselvesofthispermission.ForaninstanttheideastruckMadameDanglarsthatthiseagernessonthepartoftheyoungviscountarosefromhisimpatiencetojoinherparty,andshewhisperedherexpectationstoherdaughter,thatAlbertwashurryingtopayhisrespectstothem.MademoiselleEugenie,however,merelyreturnedadissentingmovementofthehead,while,withacoldsmile,shedirectedtheattentionofhermothertoanoppositeboxonthefirstcircle,inwhichsattheCountessG—andwhereMorcerfhadjustmadehisappearance.
