           Fromthesalontheypassedintothebed-chamber;itwasamodeloftasteandsimpleelegance.Asingleportrait,signedbyLeopoldRobert,shoneinitscarvedandgildedframe.ThisportraitattractedtheCountofMonteCristo’sattention,forhemadethreerapidstepsinthechamber,andstoppedsuddenlybeforeit.Itwastheportraitofayoungwomanoffiveorsixandtwenty,withadarkcomplexion,andlightandlustrouseyes,veiledbeneathlonglashes.SheworethepicturesquecostumeoftheCatalanfisherwomen,aredandblackbodice,andgoldenpinsinherhair.Shewaslookingatthesea,andherformwasoutlinedontheblueoceanandsky.ThelightwassofaintintheroomthatAlbertdidnotperceivethepallorthatspreaditselfoverthecount’svisage,orthenervousheavingofhischestandshoulders.Silenceprevailedforaninstant,duringwhichMonteCristogazedintentlyonthepicture.

           "Youhavethereamostcharmingmistress,viscount,"saidthecountinaperfectlycalmtone;"andthiscostumeaballcostume,doubtlessbecomesheradmirably."
