           AlbertattributedtoFranz’sabsencetheextremekindnessofthefairpeasantinraisinghermask.FranzwasnotsufficientlyegotisticaltostopAlbertinthemiddleofanadventurethatpromisedtoprovesoagreeabletohiscuriosityandsoflatteringtohisvanity.Hefeltassuredthattheperfectindiscretionofhisfriendwoulddulyinformhimofallthathappened;andas,duringthreeyearsthathehadtravelledalloverItaly,asimilarpieceofgoodfortunehadneverfallentohisshare,Franzwasbynomeanssorrytolearnhowtoactonsuchanoccasion.HethereforepromisedAlbertthathewouldcontenthimselfthemorrowwithwitnessingtheCarnivalfromthewindowsoftheRospoliPalace.

           ThenextmorninghesawAlbertpassandrepass,holdinganenormousbouquet,whichhedoubtlessmeanttomakethebearerofhisamorousepistle.ThisbeliefwaschangedintocertaintywhenFranzsawthebouquet(conspicuousbyacircleofwhitecamellias)inthehandofacharmingharlequindressedinrose-coloredsatin.Theeveningwasnolongerjoy,butdelirium.Albertnothingdoubtedbutthatthefairunknownwouldreplyinthesamemanner.Franzanticipatedhiswishesbysayingthatthenoisefatiguedhim,andthatheshouldpassthenextdayinwritingandlookingoverhisjournal.Albertwasnotdeceived,forthenexteveningFranzsawhimentertriumphantlyshakingafoldedpaperwhichheheldbyonecorner."Well,"saidhe,"wasImistaken?"
