           Albertplacedthefreshbouquetinhisbutton-hole,buthekeptthefadedoneinhishand;andwhenheagainmetthecalash,heraisedittohislips,anactionwhichseemedgreatlytoamusenotonlythefairladywhohadthrownit,butherjoyouscompanionsalso.Thedaywasasgayastheprecedingone,perhapsevenmoreanimatedandnoisy;thecountappearedforaninstantathiswindow,butwhentheyagainpassedhehaddisappeared.ItisalmostneedlesstosaythattheflirtationbetweenAlbertandthefairpeasantcontinuedallday.Intheevening,onhisreturn,Franzfoundaletterfromtheembassy,informinghimthathewouldhavethehonorofbeingreceivedbyhisholinessthenextday.
