Thecurtainroseontheballet,whichwasoneofthoseexcellentspecimensoftheItalianschool,admirablyarrangedandputonthestagebyHenri,whohasestablishedforhimselfagreatreputationthroughoutItalyforhistasteandskillinthechoreographicart—oneofthosemasterlyproductionsofgrace,method,andeleganceinwhichthewholecorpsdeballet,fromtheprincipaldancerstothehumblestsupernumerary,areallengagedonthestageatthesametime;andahundredandfiftypersonsmaybeseenexhibitingthesameattitude,orelevatingthesamearmorlegwithasimultaneousmovement,thatwouldleadyoutosupposethatbutonemind,oneactofvolition,influencedthemovingmass—theballetwascalled"Poliska."Howevermuchtheballetmighthaveclaimedhisattention,FranzwastoodeeplyoccupiedwiththebeautifulGreektotakeanynoteofit;whilesheseemedtoexperienceanalmostchildlikedelightinwatchingit,hereager,animatedlookscontrastingstronglywiththeutterindifferenceofhercompanion,who,duringthewholetimethepiecelasted,neverevenmoved,notevenwhenthefurious,crashingdinproducedbythetrumpets,cymbals,andChinesebellssoundedtheirloudestfromtheorchestra.Ofthishetooknoheed,butwas,asfarasappearancesmightbetrusted,enjoyingsoftreposeandbrightcelestialdreams.Theballetatlengthcametoaclose,andthecurtainfellamidtheloud,unanimousplauditsofanenthusiasticanddelightedaudience.
