           FranzpresentedAlbertasoneofthemostdistinguishedyoungmenoftheday,bothasregardedhispositioninsocietyandextraordinarytalents;nordidhesaymorethanthetruth,forinParisandthecircleinwhichtheviscountmoved,hewaslookeduponandcitedasamodelofperfection.Franzaddedthathiscompanion,deeplygrievedathavingbeenpreventedthehonorofbeingpresentedtothecountessduringhersojourninParis,wasmostanxioustomakeupforit,andhadrequestedhim(Franz)toremedythepastmisfortunebyconductinghimtoherbox,andconcludedbyaskingpardonforhispresumptioninhavingtakenituponhimselftodoso.Thecountess,inreply,bowedgracefullytoAlbert,andextendedherhandwithcordialkindnesstoFranz;then,invitingAlberttotakethevacantseatbesideher,sherecommendedFranztotakethenextbest,ifhewishedtoviewtheballet,andpointedtotheonebehindherownchair.AlbertwassoondeeplyengrossedindiscoursinguponParisandParisianmatters,speakingtothecountessofthevariouspersonstheybothknewthere.Franzperceivedhowcompletelyhewasinhiselement;and,unwillingtointerferewiththepleasurehesoevidentlyfelt,tookupAlbert’sglass,andbeganinhisturntosurveytheaudience.
