           Therewasnothingremarkableinthecircumstanceofafragmentofgranitegivingwayandfallingheavilybelow;butitseemedtohimthatthesubstancethatfellgavewaybeneaththepressureofafoot,andalsothatsomeone,whoendeavoredasmuchaspossibletopreventhisfootstepsfrombeingheard,wasapproachingthespotwherehesat.Conjecturesoonbecamecertainty,forthefigureofamanwasdistinctlyvisibletoFranz,graduallyemergingfromthestaircaseopposite,uponwhichthemoonwasatthatmomentpouringafulltideofsilverybrightness.

           Thestrangerthuspresentinghimselfwasprobablyapersonwho,likeFranz,preferredtheenjoymentofsolitudeandhisownthoughtstothefrivolousgabbleoftheguides.Andhisappearancehadnothingextraordinaryinit;butthehesitationwithwhichheproceeded,stoppingandlisteningwithanxiousattentionateverystephetook,convincedFranzthatheexpectedthearrivalofsomeperson.Byasortofinstinctiveimpulse,Franzwithdrewasmuchaspossiblebehindhispillar.Abouttenfeetfromthespotwhereheandthestrangerwere,theroofhadgivenway,leavingalargeroundopening,throughwhichmightbeseenthebluevaultofheaven,thicklystuddedwithstars.
