           Ateachcross-pathwasanorchestra,andtablesspreadwithrefreshments;theguestsstopped,formedquadrilles,anddancedinanypartofthegroundstheypleased.CarmelawasattiredlikeawomanofSonnino.Hercapwasembroideredwithpearls,thepinsinherhairwereofgoldanddiamonds,hergirdlewasofTurkeysilk,withlargeembroideredflowers,herbodiceandskirtwereofcashmere,herapronofIndianmuslin,andthebuttonsofhercorsetwereofjewels.Twoofhercompanionsweredressed,theoneasawomanofNettuno,andtheotherasawomanofLaRiccia.FouryoungmenoftherichestandnoblestfamiliesofRomeaccompaniedthemwiththatItalianfreedomwhichhasnotitsparallelinanyothercountryintheworld.TheywereattiredaspeasantsofAlbano,Velletri,Civita–Castellana,andSora.Weneedhardlyaddthatthesepeasantcostumes,likethoseoftheyoungwomen,werebrilliantwithgoldandjewels.
