           Theyounggirltrembledverymuchathearingthestories;butVampareassuredherwithasmile,tappingthebuttofhisgoodfowling-piece,whichthrewitsballsowell;andifthatdidnotrestorehercourage,hepointedtoacrow,perchedonsomedeadbranch,tookaim,touchedthetrigger,andthebirdfelldeadatthefootofthetree.Timepassedon,andthetwoyoungpeoplehadagreedtobemarriedwhenVampashouldbetwentyandTeresanineteenyearsofage.Theywerebothorphans,andhadonlytheiremployers’leavetoask,whichhadbeenalreadysoughtandobtained.Onedaywhentheyweretalkingovertheirplansforthefuture,theyheardtwoorthreereportsoffirearms,andthensuddenlyamancameoutofthewood,nearwhichthetwoyoungpersonsusedtograzetheirflocks,andhurriedtowardsthem.Whenhecamewithinhearing,heexclaimed.‘Iampursued;canyouconcealme?’Theyknewfullwellthatthisfugitivemustbeabandit;butthereisaninnatesympathybetweentheRomanbrigandandtheRomanpeasantandthelatterisalwaysreadytoaidtheformer.Vampa,withoutsayingaword,hastenedtothestonethatcloseduptheentrancetotheirgrotto,drewitaway,madeasigntothefugitivetotakerefugethere,inaretreatunknowntoeveryone,closedthestoneuponhim,andthenwentandresumedhisseatbyTeresa.Instantlyafterwardsfourcarbineers,onhorseback,appearedontheedgeofthewood;threeofthemappearedtobelookingforthefugitive,whilethefourthdraggedabrigandprisonerbytheneck.
