           Fortunately,themarinerswereusedtotheselatitudes,andkneweveryrockintheTuscanArchipelago;forinthemidstofthisobscurityFranzwasnotwithoutuneasinessCorsicahadlongsincedisappeared,andMonteCristoitselfwasinvisible;butthesailorsseemed,likethelynx,toseeinthedark,andthepilotwhosteereddidnotevincetheslightesthesitation.Anhourhadpassedsincethesunhadset,whenFranzfanciedhesaw,ataquarterofamiletotheleft,adarkmass,buthecouldnotpreciselymakeoutwhatitwas,andfearingtoexcitethemirthofthesailorsbymistakingafloatingcloudforland,heremainedsilent;suddenlyagreatlightappearedonthestrand;landmightresembleacloud,butthefirewasnotameteor."Whatisthislight?"askedhe.
