           Theexplosionsoonfollowed;theupperrockwasliftedfromitsbasebytheterrificforceofthepowder;theloweroneflewintopieces;thousandsofinsectsescapedfromtheapertureDanteshadpreviouslyformed,andahugesnake,liketheguardiandemonofthetreasure,rolledhimselfalongindarkeningcoils,anddisappeared.

           Dantesapproachedtheupperrock,whichnow,withoutanysupport,leanedtowardsthesea.Theintrepidtreasure-seekerwalkedroundit,and,selectingthespotfromwhenceitappearedmostsusceptibletoattack,placedhisleverinoneofthecrevices,andstrainedeverynervetomovethemass.Therock,alreadyshakenbytheexplosion,totteredonitsbase.Dantesredoubledhisefforts;heseemedlikeoneoftheancientTitans,whouprootedthemountainstohurlagainstthefatherofthegods.Therockyielded,rolledover,boundedfrompointtopoint,andfinallydisappearedintheocean.

           Onthespotithadoccupiedwasacircularspace,exposinganironringletintoasquareflag-stone.Dantesutteredacryofjoyandsurprise;neverhadafirstattemptbeencrownedwithmoreperfectsuccess.Hewouldfainhavecontinued,buthiskneestrembled,andhisheartbeatsoviolently,andhissightbecamesodim,thathewasforcedtopause.Thisfeelinglastedbutforamoment.Edmondinsertedhisleverintheringandexertedallhisstrength;theflag-stoneyielded,anddisclosedstepsthatdescendeduntiltheywerelostintheobscurityofasubterraneousgrotto.
