           Thenthelandingbegan.Dantesreflected,asheworked,ontheshoutofjoywhich,withasingleword,hecouldevokefromallthesemen,ifhegaveutterancetotheoneunchangingthoughtthatpervadedhisheart;but,farfromdisclosingthisprecioussecret,healmostfearedthathehadalreadysaidtoomuch,andbyhisrestlessnessandcontinualquestions,hisminuteobservationsandevidentpreoccupation,arousedsuspicions.Fortunately,asregardedthiscircumstanceatleast,hispainfulpastgavetohiscountenanceanindeliblesadness,andtheglimmeringsofgayetyseenbeneaththiscloudwereindeedbuttransitory.
