           Theyoungmanstoppedsuddenly,lookedaroundhim,andperceivedCaderoussesittingattablewithDanglars,underanarbor.

           "Well",saidCaderousse,"whydon’tyoucome?Areyoureallyinsuchahurrythatyouhavenotimetopassthetimeofdaywithyourfriends?"

           "Particularlywhentheyhavestillafullbottlebeforethem,"addedDanglars.Fernandlookedatthembothwithastupefiedair,butdidnotsayaword.

           "Heseemsbesotted,"saidDanglars,pushingCaderoussewithhisknee."Arewemistaken,andisDantestriumphantinspiteofallwehavebelieved?"

           "Why,wemustinquireintothat,"wasCaderousse’sreply;andturningtowardstheyoungman,said,"Well,Catalan,can’tyoumakeupyourmind?"

           Fernandwipedawaytheperspirationsteamingfromhisbrow,andslowlyenteredthearbor,whoseshadeseemedtorestoresomewhatofcalmnesstohissenses,andwhosecoolnesssomewhatofrefreshmenttohisexhaustedbody.
