           Totheeleganceofanervousandslightformhadsucceededthesolidityofaroundedandmuscularfigure.Astohisvoice,prayers,sobs,andimprecationshadchangeditsothatattimesitwasofasingularlypenetratingsweetness,andatothersroughandalmosthoarse.Moreover,frombeingsolongintwilightordarkness,hiseyeshadacquiredthefacultyofdistinguishingobjectsinthenight,commontothehyenaandthewolf.Edmondsmiledwhenhebeheldhimself:itwasimpossiblethathisbestfriendif,indeed,hehadanyfriendleftcouldrecognizehim;hecouldnotrecognizehimself.

           ThemasterofTheYoungAmelia,whowasverydesirousofretainingamongsthiscrewamanofEdmond’svalue,hadofferedtoadvancehimfundsoutofhisfutureprofits,whichEdmondhadaccepted.
