           "Intwoorthreehours,"thoughtDantes,"theturnkeywillentermychamber,findthebodyofmypoorfriend,recognizeit,seekformeinvain,andgivethealarm.Thenthetunnelwillbediscovered;themenwhocastmeintotheseaandwhomusthaveheardthecryIuttered,willbequestioned.Thenboatsfilledwitharmedsoldierswillpursuethewretchedfugitive.Thecannonwillwarneveryonetorefusesheltertoamanwanderingaboutnakedandfamished.ThepoliceofMarseilleswillbeonthealertbyland,whilstthegovernorpursuesmebysea.Iamcold,Iamhungry.
