           Danteshadnotbeendeceivedhehadreachedthefirstofthetwoislands,whichwas,infact,Tiboulen.Heknewthatitwasbarrenandwithoutshelter;butwhentheseabecamemorecalm,heresolvedtoplungeintoitswavesagain,andswimtoLemaire,equallyarid,butlarger,andconsequentlybetteradaptedforconcealment.

           Anoverhangingrockofferedhimatemporaryshelter,andscarcelyhadheavailedhimselfofitwhenthetempestburstforthinallitsfury.Edmondfeltthetremblingoftherockbeneathwhichhelay;thewaves,dashingthemselvesagainstit,wettedhimwiththeirspray.
