           Nowhisplanswerefullymade,andthisiswhatheintendedtodo.Ifwhilehewasbeingcarriedoutthegrave-diggersshoulddiscoverthattheywerebearingaliveinsteadofadeadbody,Dantesdidnotintendtogivethemtimetorecognizehim,butwithasuddencutoftheknife,hemeanttoopenthesackfromtoptobottom,and,profitingbytheiralarm,escape;iftheytriedtocatchhim,hewouldusehisknifetobetterpurpose.

           Iftheytookhimtothecemeteryandlaidhiminagrave,hewouldallowhimselftobecoveredwithearth,andthen,asitwasnight,thegrave-diggerscouldscarcelyhaveturnedtheirbacksbeforehewouldhaveworkedhiswaythroughtheyieldingsoilandescaped.Hehopedthattheweightofearthwouldnotbesogreatthathecouldnotovercomeit.Ifhewasdetectedinthisandtheearthprovedtooheavy,hewouldbestifled,andthensomuchthebetter,allwouldbeover.Danteshadnoteatensincetheprecedingevening,buthehadnotthoughtofhunger,nordidhethinkofitnow.Hissituationwastooprecarioustoallowhimeventimetoreflectonanythoughtbutone.

           ThefirstriskthatDantesranwas,thatthejailer,whenhebroughthimhissupperatseveno’clock,mightperceivethechangethathadbeenmade;fortunately,twentytimesatleast,frommisanthropyorfatigue,Danteshadreceivedhisjailerinbed,andthenthemanplacedhisbreadandsouponthetable,andwentawaywithoutsayingaword.
