The Third Attack.

           

           Edmondheardthecreakingofthebedastheymovedthecorpse,heardthevoiceofthegovernor,whoaskedthemtothrowwateronthedeadman’sface;andseeingthat,inspiteofthisapplication,theprisonerdidnotrecover,theysentforthedoctor.Thegovernorthenwentout,andwordsofpityfellonDantes’listeningears,mingledwithbrutallaughter.

           "Well,well,"saidone,"themadmanhasgonetolookafterhistreasure.Goodjourneytohim!"

           "Withallhismillions,hewillnothaveenoughtopayforhisshroud!"saidanother.

           "Oh,"addedathirdvoice,"theshroudsoftheChateaud’Ifarenotdear!"

           "Perhaps,"saidoneofthepreviousspeakers,"ashewasachurchman,theymaygotosomeexpenseinhisbehalf."

           "Theymaygivehimthehonorsofthesack."

           Edmonddidnotloseaword,butcomprehendedverylittleofwhatwassaid.Thevoicessoonceased,anditseemedtohimasifeveryonehadleftthecell.Stillhedarednottoenter,astheymighthaveleftsometurnkeytowatchthedead.Heremained,therefore,muteandmotionless,hardlyventuringtobreathe.Attheendofanhour,heheardafaintnoise,whichincreased.Itwasthegovernorwhoreturned,followedbythedoctorandotherattendants.Therewasamoment’ssilenceitwasevidentthatthedoctorwasexaminingthedeadbody.Theinquiriessooncommenced.
