The Third Attack.

           

           Whenhebelievedthattherightmomenthadarrived,hetooktheknife,priedopentheteeth,whichofferedlessresistancethanbefore,countedoneaftertheothertwelvedrops,andwatched;thephialcontained,perhaps,twiceasmuchmore.Hewaitedtenminutes,aquarterofanhour,halfanhournochangetookplace.Trembling,hishairerect,hisbrowbathedwithperspiration,hecountedthesecondsbythebeatingofhisheart.Thenhethoughtitwastimetomakethelasttrial,andheputthephialtothepurplelipsofFaria,andwithouthavingoccasiontoforceopenhisjaws,whichhadremainedextended,hepouredthewholeoftheliquiddownhisthroat.

           Thedraughtproducedagalvaniceffect,aviolenttremblingpervadedtheoldman’slimbs,hiseyesopeneduntilitwasfearfultogazeuponthem,heheavedasighwhichresembledashriek,andthenhisconvulsedbodyreturnedgraduallytoitsformerimmobility,theeyesremainingopen.

           Halfanhour,anhour,anhourandahalfelapsed,andduringthisperiodofanguish,Edmondleanedoverhisfriend,hishandappliedtohisheart,andfeltthebodygraduallygrowcold,andtheheart’spulsationbecomemoreandmoredeepanddull,untilatlengthitstopped;thelastmovementoftheheartceased,thefacebecamelivid,theeyesremainedopen,buttheeyeballswereglazed.Itwassixo’clockinthemorning,thedawnwasjustbreaking,anditsfeebleraycameintothedungeon,andpaledtheineffectuallightofthelamp.
